Skálmöld was founded by childhood friends Snæbjörn Ragnarsson and Björgvin Sigurðsson, who had played together in death metal and punk bands. Initially a hobby, the band decided to record an album before they grew 'too old and tired.' After being rejected by most Icelandic labels, they signed with Faroese label Tutl in November 2010, releasing debut album Baldur. In April 2011, they signed with Napalm Records, which re-released Baldur worldwide and boosted their popularity, leading to invitations to Wacken Open Air and the Heidenfest 2011 tour.

The band recorded its second album, Börn Loka, in April 2012, releasing it that October. In November 2013, they performed a series of concerts with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra at Harpa concert hall in Reykjavík, releasing a live album and video later that year. Subsequent studio albums include Með vættum (2014), Vögguvísur Yggdrasils (2016), and Sorgir (2018). After a ten-year anniversary celebration and a three-year pause, their sixth studio album Ýdalir was released on 18 August 2023 through Napalm Records.
