Ancient Rites started in 1988 as a Belgian black metal band. The first members were guitarists Johan and Philippe, drummer Stefan, and Gunther Theys handling bass and vocals. Their 1991 demo, *Dark Ritual*, caught the underground’s attention worldwide just as black metal was becoming a bigger force. Soon after, Philippe died in a car crash, and not long after, Stefan took his own life. Despite these early losses, the band pushed on, with Walter Van Cortenbosch taking over on drums.
Johan then left the band, so the band brought in guitarists Pascal and Bart Vandereycken to replace him and Philippe. This lineup released the *Evil Prevails* EP and several other records through different labels. Pascal later left due to his military service obligations, leaving the band a trio. In 1994, they put out their first full-length album, *The Diabolic Serenades*. This same trio also recorded their second album, *Blasfemia Eternal*, but Bart left in 1995, just after its release.
To support the album on tour, both Flemish and non-Flemish musicians stepped in. This shift helped the once strongly Flemish band become international: Dutch guitarist Erik Sprooten (ex-Inquisitor) joined later in 1996, and Finnish guitarist Jan “Örkki” Yrlund (ex-Lacrimosa) came on in mid-1997. Shortly after their third album, *Fatherland*, keyboardist Domingo Smets (ex-Agathocles) was added. This lineup recorded *Dim Carcosa*, but Smets left in 2002, replaced by Davy Wouters (ex-Oblivion, Danse Macabre). That group appears on the live album/DVD *And the Hordes Stood as One*.
While touring for that live release in May 2003, the band fired Jan Yrlund and brought back Bart. In December 2004, the lineup expanded again: Domingo Smets returned, this time on bass so Günther could focus solely on vocals, and Raf Jansen—who had filled in for Bart for several months in 1996–1997—came back as a third guitarist. Most of 2005 was spent writing for the album *Rubicon*, which came out on 15 May 2006.
