Eluveitie was created in the winter of 2002 by Chrigel Glanzmann as a studio project after numerous failed attempts to form a band. The name comes from graffiti on a vessel from Mantua (c. 300 BC) reading 'eluveitie' in Etruscan letters, interpreted as the Etruscan form of the Celtic *(h)elvetios, referring to a man of Helvetian descent. The first demo, Vên, was released in 2003, and its success led to the recruitment of a full band and the re-release of Vên as an EP in 2004. The band signed with Fear Dark and released their first full-length album, Spirit, in June 2006.
In November 2007, Eluveitie signed with Nuclear Blast and released Slania in February 2008, their first album on a major label. The band experienced several line-up changes over the years, including the departure of Rafi Kirder in 2008 and Sevan Kirder later in 2012. They released Evocation I: The Arcane Dominion in April 2009, followed by Everything Remains (As It Never Was) in February 2010. In August 2010, they were awarded the Metal Hammer 'Up and Coming 2010' title at Wacken Open Air.
Subsequent albums include Helvetios (2012) and Origins (2014). In 2016, three members left to form Cellar Darling, and new members joined, including Fabienne Erni on Celtic harp and vocals. The band released Evocation II: Pantheon in August 2017 and continues to work on new material.
