Ithilien was formed in 2005 by Pierre Ithilien in Brussels. The name means 'Country of the Moon' in Sindarin, a language created by J. R. R. Tolkien, though the band's songs and themes are unrelated to The Lord of the Rings. The band recorded its first EP, Tribute to the Fallen, and the single 'Endless Horizons' in 2011, at which time their style was primarily melodic death metal with emerging folk elements. By 2012, a stable lineup was established, including members who brought folk instruments that became characteristic of the band's sound.

In 2013, Ithilien released their debut album, From Ashes to the Frozen Land, through Danish label Mighty Music. The album follows a storyline described as 'one hour of a musical atmospheric journey of black, death and pagan metal' addressing loss, rebirth, and perseverance. The band distinguished itself by using real folk instruments on stage and in recordings, and by wearing Viking-inspired costumes. They played over 80 concerts worldwide, including tours with Eluveitie and Skálmöld.

In 2017, the band released their second album, Shaping the Soul, through Italian label WormHoleDeath. This album marked a stylistic shift toward 'folkcore,' a close combination of traditional folk music and modern metal with distorted vocals and heavy guitar riffs. The album's concept follows the five stages of grief as theorized by Elisabeth Kübler-Ross: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. The band abandoned fantasy costumes for modern clothing in 2016. A music video for 'Edelweiss' was released in February 2018, and the band toured Japan that April, with no known activity since.
